Frequently Asked Questions

Who do I email if I need help?

Are my files backed up?

The department provides backup service for all important department services and servers. This includes department email, web, and database servers. Backup service for research servers and office and lab workstations is provided by the IT support group on a per request basis.

For those hosts which we are backing up, files are backed up nightly, and we retain backed up files for one year. If the file you need was removed or lost longer than a year previous, we cannot recover it. Please also note that we will back up only user files (/home, /Users, C:\Users, or C:\Documents and Settings). If you are interested in learning more about our backup schedule, or would like to request that your workstation or server be added to our backup schedule, please contact us at

What is the maximum allowed size for an email attachment?

Our mail system allows email messages to be a maximum of 35MB for both sending and receiving. Encoding the message for email adds to the size of the message. The largest attachment you can send or receive will be somewhat smaller. If you must send a large file to someone, it is usually more efficient to use your Web space to make the file available to them and send them a link to download it instead.
