Faculty and students in Communications and Signal Processing at UCSB conduct basic and applied research in communication systems and networks, digital signal processing, and source compression.  There are on-going research projects in the areas of adaptive and digital signal processing; high-resolution imaging and imaging systems optimization; wireless communications; sensor networks; computer vision; bio-image informatics; data, speech, audio, still image, and video compression; engineering computation and algorithms; speech, image and video processing; information theory and rate distortion theory; pattern recognition; and neural networks.

The Communications and Signal Processing faculty have collaborations with the computer engineering, electronics and photonics, and control groups within the ECE Department. Current interdisciplinary collaborations include projects with computer science, biological systems, media arts & technology, geography, and psychology. 

In addition to conducting basic research supported by the National Science Foundation and other governmental agencies, the faculty are actively engaged in research with leading companies. Opportunities for graduate student internships are often available for those students who wish to deepen their knowledge of technology and broaden their engineering background.
